THE BLACKBURN CHALLENGE
The Blackburn Challenge is the premier human-powered open-water event on the East Coast. One of the reasons why this event has been recognized as one of the best open water races in America is due to the venue – a 20 mile circumnavigation of Cape Ann Massachusetts – a course that inevitably serves up a wide variety of conditions on the water. The first three or so miles of the race are along the protected and tidal Annisquam River, resulting in something akin to a head race, but with plenty more interesting obstacles to avoid (mooring and navigation buoys, boats, docks, etc.) and a 17 mile open water race after it. Once the river empties into the open waters of Ipswich Bay, the wind strength and direction play a decisive role in determining the conditions of the day, which range from relative calm (it’s never a flat water event) to very rough (staying upright and afloat trump the idea of competition). The last couple of miles from the Dogbar Breakwater at the entrance of Gloucester Harbor to Pavillion Beach, are usually plagued by confused boat wakes from numerous fishing, whale watch and pleasure boats going in all directions. Each year at the Blackburn brings us a very different story, making the event so interesting for open-water aficionados. One thing that thankfully remains the same each year is the fun time after finishing – cold beer, massages, good music and food and the inevitable harrowing stories from the event.

Join us for an intriguing Lecture Series with local historian Jim McAllister. Step into the worled of the Lost Generation as we explore beautiful French wines and the culture and legends of 1920's Paris.
- Lecture 1: The Roots of the School of Paris, Tuesday, April 6 at 7:30-9pm $20
They came from all over Europe, and took up residence in garrets and ghettos in the Montmartre and Montparnasse neighborhoods of Paris. They starved, froze, drank to excess, loved, created art - and survived through the graces of friendly café owners, art dealers, and the occasional collector. And somehow, despite all the obstacles they faced, this international community of artists managed to give birth to cubism, fauvism, orphism and other important modernist art movements.
- Lecture 2: Americans Authors in Paris, Tuesday, April 13 at 7:30-9 pm $20
In the decade following the end of World War 1, tens of thousands Americans boarded steamships bound for the City of Lights. They were drawn by the low cost of living and a cultural environment far removed from the repressive American scene of the times. Many of these travelers, like Ernest Hemingway and Kay Boyle, were writers, and with the help of avant garde publishers and American newspapers they would come into their own during their time in Paris.
- Lecture 3: Working Together, Tuesday, April 20 at 7:30-9pm $20
The electric cultural environment in 1920s Paris also attracted many dancers and dance troupes, musicians, and composers from America and Europe. Some, including Josephine Baker, Igor Stravinsky, Cole Porter, and Sergei Diaghilev, would achieve international fame. Collectively, they would create , often in conjunction with artists like Pablo Picasso and Gerald Murphy, music and theatric extravaganzas unlike anything ever seen before on stage.
Special Deal - Sign up for all 3 lectures for $50! Seating is limited. Please sign up quickly! Puchase tickets online at http://www.pmousse.com
